Launched as a minor entertainment to encourage more locals to shop in the town rather than visit Stockton or Middlesbrough, it has grown and grown into a formidable event in its own right that is now famous around the world.
Its now celebrating more than 40 years of the festival and can certainly justifiably claim to be the largest arts festival of its kind in the UK.
